The IEC 60216-1 test standard specifies the general aging conditions and procedures to be used for deriving thermal endurance properties and provides guidance in using the detailed instructions and guidelines in other parts of the standard.

Although originally developed for use with electrical insulating materials and simple combinations of such materials, the procedures are considered of more general applicability and are commonly used in the evaluation of materials not intended for use as electrical insulation.

In the application of this standard, a practically linear relationship is assumed between the logarithm of the time required to cause a predetermined property change and the corresponding absolute temperature (Arrhenius relationship).

For the current application of the standard, no transition, especially a first-class transition, should occur in the operating temperature range.

Throughout the remainder of this standard the term "insulating materials" always means "insulating materials and simple combinations of such materials".

This sixth edition cancels and replaces the fifth edition published in 2001. The instructions for calculating thermal endurance properties using simplified procedures form an editorial revision in which the simplified method has been removed and now forms Part 60216 of the IEC 8 series.
