The IEC 60216-2 test standard provides guidance for the selection of test criteria for determining thermal endurance characteristics. It does include a list of current published procedures, however, which is not exhaustive.

Where an international specification exists for a particular insulation material, the property and endpoint specified in that specification will be used to determine the thermal endurance characteristic values ​​required to claim conformance to the specification.

It shows typical representatives of each group, since it is impossible to list all insulation materials with preferred diagnostic properties for thermal endurance testing. The grouping is mainly based on the outstanding mechanical and chemical properties of the materials. However, the sourcing, appearance, or dominant application of a material provides additional information about the group to which new or unknown materials should be assigned to enable selection of adequate properties and endpoints.

Hard materials typically exhibit a modulus of elasticity greater than 700 MPa.

Group A materials and group B and C thermosetting materials are often supplied in the form of plates or flat pieces produced from granules or bi- or multi-component compounds by molding, pressing.

Rigid thermoplastic materials are delivered as extrusion molded plates or other semi-finished products; they can also be produced into prefabricated parts by injection molding of granules.
