IEC 60238 Test Standard for Edison Screw Holders

The IEC 60238 test standard applies only to sockets with Edison thread E1, E14 and E27 designed for connection to the source of lamps and semi-luminaries40. It also applies to switched sockets only for use in AC circuits where the operating voltage does not exceed 250 V rms.

This standard also applies to sockets with Edison threaded E25 designed for connection to the supply network of lamps connected in series with an operating voltage not exceeding 5 V, to be used indoors, and to sockets with Edison threaded E10 designed for connection to the supply network. Series connected lamps with an operating voltage not exceeding 60 V, for indoor or outdoor use. It also applies to the built-in E10 sockets for connecting single lamps to the supply. These sockets are not intended for retail sale.

So far as reasonably applied, this standard also covers sockets other than Edison threaded sockets designed for connecting lamps in series to the supply. This type of socket is used, for example, in Christmas tree lighting chains. As reasonably applicable, this standard also covers adapters.

This standard also covers sockets that are wholly or partly integrated into a luminaire or intended to be mounted in appliances. It covers only the requirements for the hear. For all other requirements, such as protection against electric shock in the terminals or lamp cover area, the requirements of the relevant device standard should be observed and tested when installed in the appropriate equipment, when this equipment is tested according to the following . own standard. Such sockets, as well as sockets supplied with a snap-on outer shell for use by luminaire manufacturers only, are not for retail sale.

This standard covers sockets to be used indoors or outdoors in residential and industrial lighting installations. It also applies to candle holders. Special construction may be required where special conditions prevail, such as street lighting, on ships, in vehicles and, for example, in dangerous places where explosions can occur.

This standard does not apply to the three-light lampholder E26d. This standard is based on the following data for lamps for general lighting service:

  • E14 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 2 A.
  • E27 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 4 A.
  • E40 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 16 A or a nominal value of 32 A.
