IEC 60296 Fluids for Electrotechnical Applications - Mineral Insulating Lubricants for Electrical Equipment

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of the IEC 60296 standard. IEC 60296 provides specifications and test methods for unused and recycled mineral insulating oils.

Applies to mineral oil delivered according to contractual agreement, intended for use in transformers, switchgear and similar electrical equipment where oil is required for insulation and heat transfer.

Both unused oil and recycled oil covered by this standard are not used or in contact with electrical equipment or other equipment not required for production, storage or transportation.

Unused oils are obtained from the raw material by refining, modifying and/or mixing petroleum products and other hydrocarbons.

Recycled oils are produced from oils that were previously used as mineral insulating oils in electrical equipment and that have been re-refined or recovered (regenerated) by off-site processes.

Such oils shall be supplied in accordance with the originally accepted unused mineral insulating oil specification. This document does not distinguish between methods used to recycle mineral insulating oil.

In situ treated oils (see IEC 60422) are not covered by this document.
Oils with and without additives are within the scope of this document.

This document does not apply to mineral insulating oils used as impregnation media in cables or capacitors.

This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

• This International Standard is applicable to the specifications and test methods for unused and recycled mineral insulating oils in the delivered condition.
• Two groups, Type A and Type B, are defined according to their performance among transformer insulating oils.
• Included is a new method for exposing mineral insulating oils to stray gas under thermo-oxidative stress, tested in a joint round robin test (RRT) among IEC technical committee 10.
