Battery powered devices and other DC powered devices are within the scope of this standard. Electric powered or battery powered dual feed devices are considered battery powered devices when operated in battery mode.

As far as possible, this standard addresses the general hazards posed by devices encountered by all persons who use the devices in sun lounges, beauty parlors and similar facilities or at home. However, it is generally ignored.

Attention is drawn to the following:

  • Additional requirements may be required for devices intended for use in vehicles or ships or aircraft;
  • In many countries, additional requirements are set by national health authorities, national authorities responsible for labor protection and similar authorities;
  • IEC 60598-1 is valid as long as it is reasonable.

This standard does not apply to:

  • Devices for skin or hair care (IEC 60335-2-23);
  • Sauna heaters and infrared cabins (IEC 60335-2-53);
  • Cosmetic and beauty care devices incorporating lasers and intense light sources (IEC 60335-2-113)
