DIN 53457 Testing of Plastics - Determination of Elasticity Modulus with Tensile - Compression and Bending Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of DIN 53457 testing. This standard is used to determine the modulus of elasticity in tensile, compression and bending tests, including plastics for which there is no linear relationship between force and deformation at actual test temperatures in the elongation range of 0 to 0,250/0.

DIN 53457 Testing of Plastics - Determination of Elasticity Modulus with Tensile - Compression and Bending Tests

In order to obtain a uniform assessment for all plastics, the modulus of elasticity according to this standard is the value determined from the increase in force between expansion or compression between 0,050/0 and 0,250/0 and the corresponding change in deformation. In the case of a linear relationship between force and deformation, this is the same as the conventional modulus of elasticity, and in the case of non-linearity it corresponds to a secant modulus. In this standard, the distinction between elastic modulus and secant modulus is ignored.

The values to be determined are material properties that depend on the test conditions, in particular the deformation rate and temperature, as well as the production and pretreatment of the test samples. Because the test is performed at a constant deformation rate and temperature, the results are generally not transferable to other conditions.

Time-dependent relaxation or creep modulus is required for static strength and deformation calculations of components subjected to long-term stress. The frequency dependence of the E-module is determined according to DIN 53440 Part 2.

The temperature dependence of the elastic modulus can be approximately determined from the ratio of the elastic modulus to the shear modulus at a temperature and the temperature profile of the shear modulus determined using torsional vibration testing according to DIN 53445.
