This European standard specifies a method for determining the indentation hardness of glass-reinforced plastic materials by means of a Barcol hardness tester.
The Barcol hardness tester is a portable device that can be used with a stand. This method is suitable for testing the notch hardness of individual test specimens or finished products for production control purposes. A given indentation is forced into the test material under specified conditions and the depth of penetration is measured.
Condition test specimens before testing in the atmosphere specified in the relevant material specification. Condition test specimens with one of those specified in EN ISO 291 if the material is not characteristic.
Perform the test in one of the standard atmospheres specified in EN ISO 291, unless otherwise specified in the relevant material specification. When conditioning and testing under the specified standard conditions is not possible, this should be stated in the test report.
Automatic recording of time and notch depth at a sufficient data collection frequency with an analysis algorithm can be used to calculate the initial hardness value. The time-dependent recording of indentation depth provides the possibility to analyze and measure creep effects.
