ISO 11357-1 Plastics - Differential Scanning Calorimetry Test

This part of ISO 11357 specifies a number of general aspects of differential scanning calorimetry, such as principle and apparatus, general aspects of sampling, calibration and procedure, and the test report common to all parts below.

For each measurement run, it is common practice to record a curve with temperature or time plotted as the abscissa and the difference in heat flow rate as the ordinate. The endothermic and/or exothermic direction is shown on the DSC curve.

According to the principles of thermodynamics, the energy absorbed by a system is considered positive and the energy released is considered negative. This approach implies that the endothermic direction points up on the ordinate and the exothermic direction points down. It also has the advantage that the direction of thermal effects is consistent in the heat flow rate and specific heat plots.
