IEC 60598-1 Luminaires - Part 1: General Requirements and Tests

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60598-1 standard. This part of the IEC 60598 standard specifies the general requirements for luminaires with electric light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1000 V. The requirements and related tests of this standard cover: classification, marking, mechanical structure, electrical structure and photobiological safety.

IEC 60598-1 Luminaires - Part 1: General Requirements and Tests

The IEC 60598-1 standard is included as the main standard of LVD safety tests / LVD testing of luminaires.

Classification of Luminaires

Classification According to Electric Shock Protection Type: Luminaires must have one of Class I, II Class, III Classes according to electric shock protection.

Classification According to the Degree of Protection Against the Ingress of Dust, Solid Objects and Moisture: The luminaires must have a degree of protection (IPXX) in accordance with the EN 60529 standard against harmful water ingress.

Classification by Material of the Supporting Surface for which the Luminaire is Designed: Luminaires should be classified as follows according to whether they are designed to be mounted directly on normally flammable surfaces or whether they are designed to be mounted only on non-combustible surfaces;

  • Luminaires designed to be mounted directly on normally flammable surfaces
  • Luminaires not designed for mounting on normally flammable surfaces

Classification According to Conditions of Use: Luminaires for normal use and luminaires for heavy-duty conditions

Marking

The following information must be clearly and durably marked on the luminaire:

  • The marking to be observed when replacing lamps or other replaceable components must be visible from the outside of the luminaire (excluding the mounting surface) or behind the cover that was removed when replacing the lamp or other component, and with the lamp removed.
  • The marking to be observed during assembly must be visible from the outside of the luminaire or behind a cover or section removed during assembly.
  • The marking to be observed after installation should be visible when the luminaire is mounted and installed with the lamps in place as in normal use.
