IEC 60669-1 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 1: General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60669-1 standard. This part of the IEC 60669 standard applies only to manually operated general purpose functional switches for alternating current (AC) rated voltage. It is designed for domestic and similar fixed electrical installations indoors or outdoors, with a rated current not exceeding 63 A, not exceeding 440 V.

IEC 60669-1 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 1: General Requirements

For switches supplied with screwless terminals, the rated current is limited to 16 A. For switches supplied with insulation-piercing terminals (IPTs), the rated current is limited to 16 A.

The switches covered in this document are designed, where appropriate, for the control of the following loads in normal use:

A circuit for a tungsten filament lamp load,
A circuit for lamp load with external ballast (e.g. LED, CFL, fluorescent lamp load),
A circuit for a self-ballasted lamp load (e.g. LEDi or CFLi),
A circuit for a largely resistive load with a power factor of not less than 0,95,
Single-phase circuit for a motor load with a rated current of not less than 250 A at 750 V (3 VA) and 120 A at 540 V (4,5 VA) and a power factor of not less than 0,6. This applies to switches of not less than 10 A and which have not undergone additional testing, and momentary switches of not less than 6A and that have not undergone additional testing.

This document also applies to switch boxes, with the exception of mounting boxes for recessed switches. General requirements for flush-type switch boxes are given in IEC 60670-1.

IEC 60669-1 also applies to the following switches:

  • switches containing pilot lights,
  • electromagnetic remote control switches,
  • Switches containing a time delay device,
  • Combinations of keys and other functions (except keys combined with fuses),
  • electronic keys,
  • Switches with facilities for the exit and retention of flexible cables,
  • isolation switches,
  • Switches and related accessories for use in home and building electronic systems,
  • Fireman keys.

Switches conforming to this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures normally not exceeding +40 °C, but do not average above +5 °C over a 24-hour period with the lower limit of the ambient air temperature being –35 °C.

Switches conforming to this standard are only suitable for incorporation into equipment in a location and manner where the surrounding ambient temperature is unlikely to exceed +35 °C. Special construction or additional requirements may be required where special conditions prevail, such as ships, vehicles and the like, and in hazardous locations where explosions may occur, for example.
