The standard also includes a test to distinguish between absorbers and adsorbents. Good working practices should ensure that spills are prevented. However, when these do occur, there are many ways to control fluid spillage. These include prevention through the use of safe working practices, physical containment and removal of fluid at source or after release.
Removal can be accomplished using several different techniques, such as purely mechanical, washing with solvents or detergents, and the use of materials that physically immobilize the liquid into a form suitable for removal. It is these final materials that form the subject of this standard.
Traditionally, these materials have come to be known by the term sorbents, which has been adopted for the purposes of the standard.
