This European standard specifies a method for determining the water absorption coefficient due to the capillary action of plaster mortars containing mineral binders and normal and light aggregates.
The water absorption coefficient due to capillary action is measured using mortar prism samples under prescribed conditions at atmospheric pressure. After drying to constant mass, one side of the sample is immersed in 5 to 10 mm of water for a certain time and the increase in mass is determined.
Fresh mortar for this test shall have a volume of at least 1,5 I or at least 1,5 times the volume required to carry out the test, whichever is greater, and shall be separated from the mortar sample, either by a sample divider or by quartering, or by preparing it in the laboratory from water and other components. Three test samples will be prepared.
Ready-to-use mortars and pre-blended air-lime/sand wet mortars are to be used for sample preparation within their specified workable life when not measured with hydraulic binders.
Prior to testing, the batch should be gently mixed by hand using a trowel or pallet knife to avoid any misalignment etc.
