IEC 60825-1 Safety of Laser Products - Test Standard for Equipment Classification and Requirements

IEC 60825-1 applies to the safety of laser products that emit laser radiation in the wavelength range from 180 nm to 1 mm. A laser product may consist of a single laser with or without a separate power source, or may contain one or more lasers in a complex optical, electrical, or mechanical system. Typically, laser products are used for displaying physical and optical phenomena, material processing, reading and storing data, transmitting and displaying information, etc. using for.

IEC 60825-1 Safety of Laser Products - Test Standard for Equipment Classification and Requirements

Such systems have found use in industry, business, entertainment, research, education, medicine, and consumer products. Laser products sold to other manufacturers for use as a component of any system for subsequent sale are not subject to IEC 60825-1 as the end product itself will be subject to this standard.

The purposes of this part of IEC 60825 are:

  • introduce a classification system for lasers and laser products that emit radiation in the wavelength range from 180 nm to 1 mm, according to their optical radiation hazard rating, to aid in hazard assessment and help determine user control measures;
  • Identifying requirements for the manufacturer to provide information so that appropriate action can be taken;
  • Provide adequate warning to individuals, through labels and instructions, of the hazards associated with accessible radiation from laser products;
  • To reduce the possibility of injury by minimizing unnecessary accessible radiation and to provide better control of laser radiation hazards through shielding features.

This version includes the following important technical changes over the previous version:

  • A new class, class 1C, was introduced;
  • Measurement condition 2 ("eye magnifier" condition) removed;
  • Classification of emission of laser products below a certain brightness level intended to replace conventional light sources may optionally be based on the IEC 62471 series;
  • The achievable emission limits (AELs) for pulsed sources, particularly pulsed extended sources, for classes 1, 1M, 2, 2M and 3R have been updated (accepted for publication in Health) to reflect the most recent revision of ICNIRP guidelines on exposure limits.
