IEC 60884-1 Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of IEC 60884-1 standard. This part of the IEC 60884 standard, with or without earthing contacts, intended for domestic or similar use inside or outside the building, with a rated voltage above 50 V but not exceeding 440 V, with a rated current not exceeding 32 A, with alternating current only It includes working plugs and fixed or mobile sockets.

IEC 60884-1 Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

For fixed sockets with screwless terminals, the rated current is limited to a maximum of 16 A. This standard does not cover the rules for recessed mounting enclosures; however, it covers the rules for surface-mounted enclosures required only for the tests of the socket.

Contrary to popular belief, the IEC 60884-1 standard is not a standard within the scope of LVD, but since it is still a consumer product, products within the scope of this standard fall within the scope of the GPSD (The European General Product Safety Directive).

This standard does not apply to:

  • Plugs, sockets, intermediate plugs-sockets used in industry,
  • device plug sockets,
  • Plugs, fixed or mobile sockets for very low voltage (ELV),
  • Fuses, automatic switches, etc. with integrated fixed sockets.

Plugs and sockets conforming to this standard must be suitable for use at ambient temperatures normally not exceeding +40°C. However, with the lower limit of ambient air temperature –5°C, it does not average above +24°C over a 35-hour period.

Unlike low-priced and low-quality products released in the past, plugs and sockets for sale need to be certified. All products currently on the market or sold in Europe must meet the requirements of IEC 60884-1 (or other relevant international standards).

This section defines plug and socket types. In this section, some terms used during the tests are defined. Conditions for the product to be stationary or portable, terminal types, description of type or routine tests, etc.

In this section, the standard should be examined together with the TS 40 Plugs and Sockets – Used in Homes and Similar Places – Standard Leaflets. The suitability of the plugs and sockets are examined through the plug/pull test (10 times by plugging and unplugging), the measurement of the center distances and the measurement within the tolerances specified in the TS40 standard. Professional micrometers, vernier calipers can be used for inspection.
