IEC 60900 Hand Tools Test Standard for Use Between 1000V AC and 1500V DC

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of the IEC 60900 standard. The IEC 60900 standard is applicable to insulated, insulating and hybrid hand tools used for working in or close to live parts at rated voltages up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC.

Products designed and manufactured according to this standard contribute to the safety of users, provided that they are used by qualified personnel in accordance with safe working methods and instructions for use (where appropriate).

This standard has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of IEC 61477 where applicable. Products covered by this document may have an environmental impact at some or all stages of their life cycle.

These effects can range from mild to significant, be short- or long-term, and occur at a global, regional or local level. This document does not contain requirements and test provisions for product manufacturers or recommendations for environmental remediation to users of products.

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012. This edition is a technical revision. This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

  • Added a third category of tools, namely hybrid hand tools;
  • Introducing a new informative supplement on examples of insulated, insulated, and hybrid hand tools.

They are identified by the manufacturer's name, tool reference and year of manufacture, as well as the 1000V IEC EN 60900 mark. Insulated hand tools fall into three categories:

Insulated Hand Tools:

Hand tools made of conductive material(s) completely or partially covered with insulating material. Fully insulated tools covered with insulating materials, with the exception of the conductive parts on the work surface, reduce the risk of short circuits between two parts at different potentials.

Insulation EL Tools:

Hand tools are made entirely or mainly of insulating material(s), with the exception of inserts made of conductive materials which are used for reinforcement but have no exposed conductive points. Insulating devices can have more than one working head. It protects the user from electric shock and minimizes the risk of short circuit between two parts at different potentials.

Hybrid Tools:

Hand tools made of insulating material(s) can be used for reinforcement with exposed conductive parts (eg cutting edges) in the work head and some non-exposed conductive parts. Hybrid kits may have several working heads. It protects the user against electric shock and reduces the risk of short circuits between two parts at different potentials.
