IEC 60945 Marine Navigation and Radiocommunication Equipment and Systems - General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60945 standard. The IEC 60945 standard is the III and IV of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), accepted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). V of the Convention must be type-approved by administrations to comply with performance standards not lower than those accepted by the IMO. (Governments are defined by IMO as the governments of states whose flags ships are authorized to fly.)

IEC 60945 Marine Navigation and Radiocommunication Equipment and Systems - General Requirements

The performance standard for general requirements for ship radio equipment and electronic navigation aids adopted by IMO is given in the IMO Decision and the annexes that form the basis of this standard are reintroduced in this standard. Where appropriate, reference is made to IMO Decisions and all sub-clauses with the same wording as in the resolutions are in italics.

This standard specifies the minimum performance requirements, test methods and required test results for general requirements applicable to common specifications for all equipment described below:

Ship-borne radio equipment forming part of the global maritime distress and safety system required by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) as amended and the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels as amended;
Ship navigational equipment and, where appropriate, other navigational aids required by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) as amended and the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels as amended;
For EMC only, all other bridge-mounted equipment, equipment close to receiving antennas, and equipment that may interfere with the ship's safe navigation and radio communications.

The requirements of this standard are not intended to preclude the use of new techniques in equipment and systems, provided that the possibilities offered are not lower than those specified.

IEC 60945 covers various EMC, environmental and safety tests. Because marine equipment is subject to extremely harsh operating conditions, shipbuilders and end customers will often reject untested products outright. Manufacturers whose products have not been tested and certified by a reputable third party will therefore find it extremely difficult to access the marine equipment market and acquire customers.
