IEC 60947-3 Low Voltage Switchgear and Controller - Part 3: Switches, Disconnectors, Load Disconnectors and Fuse Combination Units

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60947-3 standard. This part of the IEC 60947 standard applies to switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units and their special accessories to be used in distribution circuits and motor circuits with a rated voltage not exceeding 1000 V AC or 1 500 V DC.

IEC 60947-3 Low Voltage Switchgear and Controller - Part 3: Switches, Disconnectors, Load Disconnectors and Fuse Combination Units

Accessories are interconnect units, extended terminals, internal coils, auxiliary contacts, motor operator etc. available as options with the basic unit. This document does not apply to equipment covered by IEC 60947-2, IEC 60947-4-1 and IEC 60947-5-1.

Special requirements are specified for switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse combiners for use in photovoltaic (PV) DC applications. Special requirements are specified for LV switchgear for the connections of aluminum conductors. Guidance on the measurement of power loss is specified.

This standard does not contain additional requirements for electrical equipment for explosive gas atmospheres. Depending on its design, a switch (or disconnector) can be called a rotary switch (disconnector), cam-operated switch (disconnector), blade switch (splitter), etc. may be called.

In this standard, the keyword also applies to devices called modifiers in French, which are designed to modify the connections between several circuits and, inter alia, replace one part of one circuit with another.

Generally, throughout this standard, switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse combinations are referred to as equipment. The purpose of this document is to state:

  • Features of the equipment;
  • Conditions applicable to equipment regarding:
  • Operation and behavior in normal service;
  • Specified abnormal conditions, eg operation and behavior in case of short circuit;
  • dielectric properties;
  • Tests to verify that these conditions are met and the methods adopted for these tests;
  • Information on marking equipment or provided by the manufacturer, for example in the catalogue.
