IEC 61300-2-6 Fiber Optic Interconnecting Devices and Passive Components Part 2-6: Tensile Strength of Coupling Mechanism

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 61300-2-6 standard. This part of the IEC 61300 standard describes a test to ensure that the coupling mechanism of a connector set or connector and device combination can withstand the axial loads likely to be applied during normal service.

IEC 61300-2-6 Fiber Optic Interconnecting Devices and Passive Components Part 2-6: Tensile Strength of Coupling Mechanism

A tensile load is uniformly applied to a joined connector set or connector and device combination in a direction that will separate the components. The load is normally applied between the connector plug and the adapter or between the connector plug and the device under test. The test apparatus must be capable of applying an axial load between a connector plug or coupling mechanism and an adapter or device.

A force generator can be any device or apparatus that can smoothly apply the specified force at the specified rate. A force gauge with the specified accuracy should be used to measure the axial force applied to the device under test (DUT).

A suitable clamping device shall be used to connect the force generator to the connector plug or coupling mechanism. Care must be taken in the design and use of the clamping device to ensure that it does not exert clamping forces that could affect the performance of the connecting plug or coupling mechanism.

The tensile load is subtracted from the specimen and from the specimen test assembly. Unless otherwise specified, the sample and component parts should be visually inspected in accordance with IEC 61300-3-1. It is checked for evidence of cracking, permanent deformation or other damage that may impair its function and other pass/fail criteria specified in the relevant specification.

The severity of the test depends on the magnitude of the tensile load and, to a lesser extent, on the speed of application and the duration of the load. The size, application speed and duration of the load will be given in the relevant specification. The recommended values of the test parameters are also indicated.
