IEC 61300-3-16 Fiber Optic Interconnect Devices and Passive Components Part 3-16: End Surface Radius of Spherically Polished Rings

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 61300-3-16 standard. This part of the IEC 61300 standard describes a procedure for measuring the end face radius of a spherically polished ring and an angled ring or an angled spherically polished ring. The ferrule end face radius R is defined as the radius of curvature of the domed portion of the end face for physical contact.

IEC 61300-3-16 Fiber Optic Interconnect Devices and Passive Components Part 3-16: End Surface Radius of Spherically Polished Rings

The end face is assumed to be spherical, although in practice the end face is usually aspheric. This standard describes three methods for measuring the radius of curvature:

  • Method 1: analyzing the end surface with a two-dimensional surface analyzer;
  • Method 2: analyzing the end surface with a two-dimensional interferometry type surface analyzer;
  • Method 3: Analyzing the end face with a three-dimensional interferometry type surface analyzer.

IEC 61300-3-16 Method 1

The apparatus consists of a suitable ring holder, a positioning stage and a two-dimensional surface analyzer. This is a convenient device for holding the ferrule in a fixed vertical position or inclined in the case of an angled ferrule type. The ferrule holder is fixed to the positioning stage, which will allow the holder to be moved to the appropriate position. The stage must have sufficient rigidity to allow accurate measurement of the ferrule end surface.

IEC 61300-3-16 Method 2

The apparatus consists of a suitable ring holder, a positioning stage and a two-dimensional interferometry analyzer. This is a convenient device for holding the collet in a fixed vertical position (or inclined in the case of the angled collet type). The ferrule holder is fixed on the positioning stage, which can move the holder to the appropriate position. The stage must have sufficient rigidity to allow accurate measurement of the ferrule end surface.

IEC 61300-3-16 Method 3

The apparatus consists of a suitable ring holder, a positioning stage and a three-dimensional interferometry analyzer. This is a convenient device for holding the ferrule in a fixed vertical position or inclined in the case of an angled ferrule type. The ferrule holder is fixed on the positioning stage, which can move the holder to the appropriate position. The stage shall have sufficient rigidity to measure the ferrule end face.
