ISO 17831-1 Solid Biofuels - Standard Test Method for Determining the Mechanical Strength of Pellets and Briquettes

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 17831-1 testing. ISO 17831-1 defines a determination method for testing the mechanical strength of pellets. Mechanical durability is a measure of the resistance of compressed fuels to shocks or abrasion as a result of handling and transportation.

ISO 17831-1 Solid Biofuels - Standard Test Method for Determining the Mechanical Strength of Pellets and Briquettes

Compressed solid biomass fuel is generally classified as pellets or briquettes; of these, the diameter of the pellets is usually less than 25 mm, for the briquettes the diameter is higher. To account for different particle sizes, it was necessary to define different testers for determining strength for pellets and briquettes.

A test section is subjected to controlled shocks as the pellets hit each other and the walls of a particular rotating test chamber. Strength is calculated from the mass of the test piece after separation by sieving particles smaller than 3,15 mm and from the mass of the test piece after rolling.

For the determination of mechanical strength, a laboratory sample of at least 2 kg of material should be taken according to ISO 18135 and prepared according to ISO 14780. The test sample should be divided into four equal test samples.
