This standard specifies a method for determining the apparent hardness of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber roll covers, expressed in International Degrees of Rubber Hardness (IRHD).
The method is, in principle, similar to the methods used in ISO 48-2 for determining the hardness of rubber in that it mainly involves measuring the depth of penetration of a spherical indentation operating under a certain force. The apparatus used is similar to that described in ISO 48-2, with a base specifically designed for application to cylinder heads and similar curved surfaces.
On some rolls, there may be significant differences in the thickness of the rubber on the roll surface, which can affect the apparent hardness measured.
The hardness of a platen coating has traditionally been determined on the finished platen because it is this hardness that is critical for correct operation of the platen in its final application. Therefore, whatever method is chosen, the determined hardness values depend not only on the method and rubber used, but also on the diameter of the roller, the thickness of the coating and, in the case of thin coatings, the nature of the roller core. Therefore, the term "apparent hardness" is used to distinguish between the values obtained by the methods described in the various sections of this standard and the values that would be obtained for rubber if it were possible to use standard test methods for the standard test.
