Once prepared, the samples are placed on the plate of a pressure testing machine and centered when needed. A uniformly distributed load is applied and continuously increased until failure.
Samples will be tested in the specified direction and this will be stated in the test report. For certain forms of construction, it will be necessary to test masonry units in more than one direction. Alternative approaches are required where grinding significantly changes the contact surface or significantly reduces the height.
From the manufacturing process, the faces of the sample, whether an entire masonry unit or a piece cut from a larger unit, must be planar with a tolerance of 0,1 mm to which the load will be applied.
Samples shall be conditioned using a predetermined regime of moisture conditions or to a predetermined moisture condition, as appropriate. In all cases except conditioning by immersion, free air circulation will be provided around each sample during conditioning.
The gross area of the loaded surface shall be calculated in square millimeters by multiplying the length by the width of each sample determined in accordance with EN 772-16. Where units are to be tested with a compressive force other than normal to the bearing face, the gross area is to be calculated in a similar manner but using width and height or length and height as appropriate.
