The IEC/EN 60544-4 standard provides a classification system that serves as a guide for the selection and indexing of insulating materials intended to serve in the radiation environment of nuclear reactor facilities, reactor fuel processing facilities, irradiation facilities, particle accelerators and X-ray apparatus.
The classification system provides a set of parameters describing the use of three types of polymeric materials (rigid plastics, flexible plastics, elastomers) for use in devices exposed to ionizing radiation.
This part of IEC 60544 provides the basis for a quantitative statement of the suitability of such materials in radiation environments and therefore provides a guideline for material properties and purchasing agreements between suppliers and users.
It specifies the controls to be maintained over exposure conditions during and after irradiation of insulating materials with ionizing radiation, prior to determining radiation-induced changes in physical or chemical properties. A number of potentially important irradiation conditions are discussed, and various parameters that can affect radiation-induced reactions under these conditions are indicated.
This edition includes important technical changes from the previous edition, such as compatibility with other parts in the IEC 45 series, as well as the standards recently developed by the SC 60544A.
