The purpose of determining the compression setting by the method specified in this standard is to determine the extent to which elastomers retain their elastic properties after prolonged compression at constant strain and at a given temperature.

The test method is applicable to specimens with a hardness of 30 to 95 Shore A or IRHD. For example, it can be used to evaluate the viscoelastic behavior of gaskets and floor coverings, damping elements for machinery, and shock absorbers of all types.

The method is also suitable for assessing the curing state. By applying the method at temperatures below ambient temperature, freezing behavior can be determined and crystallization properties can be investigated.

The test method specified in this standard is not suitable for evaluating the effect of fatigue stress.

For the purpose of this standard, set compression after constant strain is the deviation of a sample after a given recovery range, expressed as a function of its deviation under strain.
