ISO 10079-3 Medical Suction Equipment - Test Standard for Vacuum or Pressure Source Powered Suction Equipment

This part of ISO 10079 specifies safety and performance requirements for medical suction equipment powered by a vacuum or pressure source. Especially for pipelines and Suction equipment, connections with electrically controlled components such as electronic timing, may also need to comply with IEC 60601-1.

ISO 10079-3 Medical Suction Equipment - Test Standard for Vacuum or Pressure Source Powered Suction Equipment

ISO 10079 Part 4 specifies the general requirements for all medical suction equipment within the ISO 10079 series and is used as the basis for this Part 3.

This standard describes the safety and performance requirements for medical suction equipment fed from a venturi suction producing a vacuum or positive pressure gas source. In general terms, the venturi effect is the drop in pressure that occurs as a fluid passes through a narrowed section of a pipe.

This standard also covers equipment connected to medical gas pipeline systems or cylinders and venturi connections. Equipment defined in this standard may be stand-alone or part of an integrated system.

The ISO 10079-3 standard sets out requirements for medical suction equipment fed from a vacuum or positive pressure gas source producing venturi suction.

The ISO 10079-3 standard does not apply to:

  • Central power supply (with vacuum or compressed air generation), piping systems and wall connectors of vehicles and buildings
  • End piece such as suction catheters and suction tips
  • Dental suction equipment
  • syringes
  • Anesthetic gas cleaning systems
  • Laboratory suction
  • Autotransfusion systems
  • Closed systems for wound drainage
  • Mucus extractors, including neonatal mucus extractors
  • Breast pumps
  • Liposuction
  • Uterine aspiration
  • Hair removal systems

Our organization also provides testing services for aspirators (suction equipment) fed from an ISO 10079-3 vacuum or positive pressure source within the scope of laboratory services.
