ISO 105-E04 Textile Color Fastness Tests, Part E04: Color Fastness to Perspiration

Textile samples in contact with adjacent fabrics are treated in two different solutions containing histidine, filtered and placed between two plates under a certain pressure in a test device. Samples and adjacent fabrics are dried separately. The change in color of each sample and the staining of adjacent fabrics are evaluated instrumentally or by comparison with gray scales.

Testers, each consisting of a stainless steel frame into which a piece of weight of about 5 kg and a base of 60 mm × 115 mm are attached, so that a pressure of (12,5 ± 0,9) kPa, approximately 60 mm × It can be applied on test specimens of (115 ± 1,5) mm × (40 ± 2) mm, placed between glass or acrylic resin plates measuring 100 mm × 2 mm. The tester should be constructed in such a way that the pressure remains unchanged if the piece of weight is removed during the test.

In many cases of cellulosic fibers dyed after treatment with copper-containing direct dyes or copper salts, prescribed testing and natural perspiration allow the copper to be removed from the dyeings. This can cause a significant change in color fastness to light, perspiration or washing and therefore it is recommended to consider this possibility.
