The test method evaluates external flame spread, heat flow to the external surface, fire spread within the test sample. The testing does not address framing details or treatment of openings (doors, windows), interior fire exposure effects, or load-bearing capabilities.
An external wall assembly is mounted on the front face of the test apparatus. This test replicates at full scale a post-flashover fire in a compartment ventilated through a window opening. Fire smoke exposes the outer surface of the test sample. The furnace is operated to recreate the gas flow determined by the apparatus calibration to achieve a specific heat flow at the outer wall surface. The gas flow ramp reaches the target for five minutes, maintains the target for fifteen minutes, then slows to no flow for five minutes.
Depending on the properties of the test sample, the area involved in combustion may increase, remain without significant change, or decrease as the combustible material of the sample is depleted. The performance of the sample is rated based on the size of the flame front above the aperture as well as the additional heat flow to the wall at a given distance above the aperture. These performance ratings are considered to reflect the potential for fire to spread to floors above the floor where the fire originated as a result of the presence of flammable materials in the exterior wall assembly.
