Thermogravimetric measurements can also be performed using different test atmospheres, for example, to distinguish degradation from oxidative degradation in an inert atmosphere.

A test sample is heated at specified rates by a controlled temperature program, and the change in mass is measured as a function of temperature. Alternatively, the sample is held at a certain constant temperature and the change in mass is measured as a function of time over a given period of time.
