The principle of the specified method specifies methods such as preparing test samples and reference samples in which the sealant to be tested adheres to two parallel contact surfaces, subjecting the test samples to the simultaneous influence of artificial light, water or humidity and high temperature under defined conditions.
Cyclic exposure of test samples to water, radiation and heat is to simulate natural weathering of sealants in service. The acceleration factor compared to the real situation is unknown. The goal is not to obtain durability data for sealants under evaluation, but to provide minimal performance in glass applications.
Samples are prepared in which the sealant to be tested adheres to two parallel glass surfaces. After the samples are cyclically exposed to high temperature artificial light and water, the samples are stretched to a defined width. After the elongation has been maintained for a period of time, the samples are examined for evidence of loss of adhesion or cohesion.
Contamination of water for dipping or spraying by-products leaking from the sealant must be avoided. This recommended procedure is to test different chemical types of sealants separately and use fresh water. If water must be recycled due to high consumption (eg during spraying), adequate replacement with clean water should be made.
