ISO 140-4 Measurement of Sound Insulation in Buildings and Structural Elements - Part 4: Field Measurements of Airborne Sound Insulation Between Rooms

The ISO 140-4 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies field methods for measuring the airborne sound insulation properties of interior walls, floors and doors between two rooms under diffuse sound field conditions in both rooms and determining the protection provided to occupants.

The methods give frequency-dependent values ​​for airborne sound insulation. They can be converted to a single number characterizing acoustic performance by applying ISO 717-1. The results obtained can be used to compare the sound insulation between rooms and the actual sound insulation with the stated requirements.

The ISO 140-4 basic standards detail the measuring procedure under ideal conditions, but give little information on how to set up a suitable measuring scheme in rooms unlike the simple box-shaped rooms of the normal living room.

Very large rooms, long and narrow rooms, stairs, combined rooms, etc. When it comes to the issue, no guidance is given in the basic standards, so ISO 140-4 guidelines have been prepared.
