The EN ISO 11507 standard, developed by the international standards organization (ISO), specifies exposure conditions for paint coatings exposed to artificial weathering in apparatus including fluorescent UV lamps and condensation or water spray.
The effects of weathering are evaluated individually by comparative tests of the selected parameters. The ultraviolet light produced by fluorescent lamps simulates only a portion of the UV region of natural sunlight, and as a result, test pieces are exposed to a small but destructive portion of the spectrum.
Due to the absence of visible and infrared energy in the light from such UV lamps compared to sunlight, the test pieces are not heated above the ambient air temperature as they would be in practical use.
Coatings made of paints, varnishes and similar materials are etched in the laboratory to simulate the aging processes that occur during natural weathering. In general, valid correlations between aging during artificial and natural weathering cannot be expected due to the large number of influencing factors.
The spectral power distribution of light from fluorescent UV lamps differs significantly from that produced in light and water exposure devices using other light sources. The type and rate of degradation and performance rankings produced by exposure to fluorescent UV lamps can be very different from that produced by exposure to other laboratory light sources.
Interlaboratory comparisons are only valid when all laboratories use the same design of fluorescent UV device, lamp, and exposure conditions.
