ISO 11644 Leather - Test for Surface Adhesion

This international standard specifies a method for measuring the adhesion of the finish to the leather or the adhesion between two adjacent coating layers.

The method applies to all finished leathers with a smooth surface, which can be adhered to an adhesive plate without sticking to the finish. Preliminary experiments may be necessary to determine whether these conditions are met.

The adhesives used in this method harden quickly and do not have time to penetrate even very thin surfaces unless there are open cracks in the surface. While adhesion is adequate to most finishes, there are still a few situations where adhesion is insufficient and a different adhesive must be used or the surface must be slightly roughened.

Since the adhesive does not penetrate, it is quite possible to test different layers of a multi-layer varnish separately. Such a polish can be tested several times until all layers are removed from the leather. It is recommended that the specifications take this fact into account.

The finished side of a leather strip is adhered to an adhesive plate by means of an adhesive film. Force is applied to the free end of the strip to peel the skin off the surface for a certain distance, the finish layer remains on the adhesive plate together with the adhesive film. The required force is measured and reported as the adhesion value of the finish.
