ISO 11654 Acoustics - Sound Absorbers for Use in Buildings - Sound Absorption Rating Standard

The ISO 11654 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method in which the frequency-dependent values of the sound absorption coefficient can be converted to a single number. Before this is done, one-third octave band values of the sound absorption coefficient measured according to ISO 354 are converted to octave bands.

ISO 11654 Acoustics - Sound Absorbers for Use in Buildings - Sound Absorption Rating Standard

The single-digit rating specified in this International Standard is used in regular offices, corridors, classrooms, hospitals, etc. It can be used to define the acoustic properties of sound absorbing products and formulate requirements for routine applications.

Rating is not appropriate. if the products are to be used in qualified environments that require careful acoustic design by specialist. In such cases, full sound absorption data as a function of frequency alone are satisfactory.

This International Standard is not applicable unless applications cover the entire frequency range of the reference curve. If only a part of this range is of interest, it may be more appropriate to look for products with good sound absorption in this range only.

The shape indicators described in this International Standard provide some guidance in identifying such products, which may have a relatively low odd number but have much higher potential given a more restricted frequency range. Such products should be evaluated from the full sound absorption curve.

Since the lower limit of the rating curve in this International Standard is the 250 Hz octave band, the rating is not appropriate below this frequency. If such low frequencies are of interest, reference should be made to the entire sound absorption curve.

This International Standard is applicable, in principle, to all building products for which the sound absorption coefficient is determined according to ISO 354. However, it is often used for chairs, partitions, etc. It is not suitable to be applied to single elements such as Nor does it apply to road barriers and road surfaces.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 11654 standard tests.
