The volume of a sample of known apparent mass is determined by measuring the change in gas volume in a pycnometer upon insertion of the sample. The volume change can be obtained directly by means of a moving piston or indirectly by measuring the pressure change in the pycnometer and calculating the volume using the pressure-volume relationship for ideal gases.

Dry test samples to constant mass before performing any volume measurements, unless excluded by the conditioning procedure. Take care to choose suitable drying conditions to avoid changes in the density of the test material.

Samples whose density change during conditioning may be greater than the accuracy required for density determination should be conditioned prior to testing against the relevant material standard. Conditioning at a certain humidity or a constant degree of crystallinity may be necessary.
