ISO 11998 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Wet Scrubbing Resistance and Cleanability of Coatings

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 11998 standard. The ISO 11998 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes an accelerated method for determining wet scrubbing resistance. Regarding the cleanability of coatings, only the method itself is specified, not contaminants.

ISO 11998 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Wet Scrubbing Resistance and Cleanability of Coatings

The ability of coatings to withstand the abrasion caused by repeated cleaning processes and the penetration of soiling agents is an important consideration, both from a practical point of view and when comparing and rating such coatings.

As these properties depend not only on the quality of the coating, but also on the substrate, application method, drying conditions and other factors, the results obtained cannot be directly transferred to the actual application.

The evaluation of the coating in this standard is based on a defined substrate, a fixed application method, specified drying conditions and a defined wet brushing method.

this International Standard is a revision of ISO 11998:1998. The use and application of the standard is now established globally and improved procedures/equipment have been proposed. A joint CEN/ISO working group agreed to perform interlaboratory testing with a new type of abrasive pad. It is estimated that the test results will be ready by the end of 2006 and an early revision of the standard can be initiated.

The test coating is applied to a test panel using a film applicator in the appropriate gap spacing. After drying and conditioning, the coated panel is weighed and subjected to 200 wet scrubbing cycles in a scrub testing machine.

It is then washed, dried and reweighed to determine the mass loss from which the average loss in film thickness is calculated. By comparing the average loss in film thickness to a given value, as agreed between the parties concerned, the coating may be rated in classes of wet scrubbing resistance.

Contaminants are applied to similarly prepared coated panels to determine cleanability. The specified contaminants are left in contact with the coating film for a certain period of time. The coated, soiled panels are then subjected to 200 wet scrubbing cycles.

When the applied dirt is observed to be removed and the coating is found to be resistant to wet scrubbing, the coating is said to be cleanable in terms of the contaminant used.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 11998 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
