The test is normally performed on dry samples conditioned in the specified atmosphere. The test is applicable to most product types, but not for materials with a clearance greater than 10 mm.
The sample is clamped between two steel rings. A piston is advanced at a constant speed at the center of the sample and perpendicular to it. The thrust force, thrust displacement, and forced displacement curve are recorded.

If it is known that the material to be tested has different properties on the two faces (for example, as a result of physical properties or the manufacturing process), then the full test should be performed on each face separately. Test specimens shall be conditioned in standard atmosphere for testing (554±20)°C and (2±65) % RH as defined in ISO 5.
Samples may be considered conditioned when the change in mass in successive weights at intervals of not less than 2 hours does not exceed 0,25% of the mass of the test sample. Standard atmospheric conditioning and/or testing may be omitted only when it can be shown that results for the same specific product type (both structure and polymer type) are not affected by changes in the atmosphere exceeding the limits. This information will be included in the test report.
