Applies to rectangular sawn timber subjected to a short-term (approximately 1 minute) load. The assessment procedure is not intended to be used for quality control purposes or acceptance of timber parcels.
This international standard provides requirements for testing structural properties for sawn timber of a given grade and size.
It is concerned with the measurement of properties similar to those occurring under service conditions, in accordance with the requirements of international performance-based standards, and is intended to derive engineering properties in structural design codes. Therefore, "bending strength", "shear strength", "bearing strength" etc. The terms relate to the loading configuration used and the intended mode of breakage.
It does not mean that every feature of wood of every class and size used in building construction should be evaluated according to this international standard. Requirements for any assessment are typically specified in building codes, quality manuals, or other material standards and specifications.
This standard is an internationally accepted reference standard for the measurement of structural properties of strength grade wood. Other standards for the measurement of structural properties may be considered conforming to this International Standard, provided that the corrections necessary to ensure equivalence between this and other standards are applied appropriately.
