ISO 14129 In-plane Shear Stress Test for Shear-Strain Response

The EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services under the ISO 14129 standard. ISO 14129 specifies a procedure for determining the in-plane shear stress/shear strain response, including the in-plane shear modulus and shear strength of fiber-reinforced plastic composites, with the ± 45° stress test method.

The method is suitable for use with thermosetting and thermoplastic matrix laminates made from unidirectional layers and/or fabrics, including unidirectional fabrics, where the placement is symmetrical and has fibers oriented at ± 45° to the sample axis.

The sample is balanced around its midplane. Typically, samples need to be strain gauged to measure parallel and vertical, and we would use our Expansion Channel Module for strain conditioning and output.

ISO 14129 describes how a test specimen is loaded in tension, consisting of a strip of rectangular cross section whose fibers are oriented at ± 45° to the specimen axis.

To determine the shear modulus, strains parallel and perpendicular to the specimen axis are measured. Composite materials are often used in aerospace, automotive and energy applications, so understanding how material strength is affected in real-world conditions is crucial.
