EN ISO 2409 Paints and Varnishes - Cross Cut Test Standard

Material Testing

EN ISO 2409 Paints and Varnishes - Cross Cut Test Standard

This standard specifies a test method for assessing the resistance of paint coatings and varnishes (including wood stains) to detachment from substrates by penetrating the substrate when a lattice pattern is cut at right angles to the veneer.

EN ISO 2409 Paints and Varnishes - Cross Cut Test Standard

The property determined by this experimental test procedure is dependent, among other factors, on the adhesion of the coating to the previous coating or substrate. However, this procedure is not a way to measure adhesion.

The described method can be used as a pass/fail test or as a six-stage classification test where conditions are appropriate. When applied to a multi-layer system, an assessment of the resistance of the individual layers of the coating to separation can be made.

The test can be carried out on finished objects or on specially prepared test specimens.

Although the method can be applied to paint on hard and soft surfaces, these different surfaces require a different test procedure.

The method is not suitable for coatings or textured coatings with a total thickness of more than 250 micrometers.
