This standard specifies a method intended for use in estimating the resistance of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubbers to cracking under dynamic tensile stress when exposed to air containing a certain ozone concentration and a certain temperature under conditions that exclude the effects of direct light.
Because the relative ozone resistance of different rubbers can vary significantly with conditions, particularly ozone concentration and temperature, extreme care should be taken when attempting to relate standard test results to service performance.
In addition, tests are performed on thin test pieces deformed in tension, and the significance of attack for objects in service can be quite different due to the effects of size and the type and magnitude of deformation. Explanatory notes on the nature of ozone cracking are provided as informative.
Methods for determining resistance to ozone cracking under static strain conditions are specified in ISO 1431-1. A reference method for estimating ozone concentration will be the subject of ISO 1431-3.
Test pieces are exposed to an atmosphere containing a constant concentration of ozone in a closed chamber at constant temperature, either under continuous dynamic stress or under alternating periods of dynamic and static stress. test pieces are inspected periodically for cracking.
