ISO 15105 Plastics - Film and Coating - Determination of Gas Transmission Rate

The ISO 15105 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies two methods for determining the gas transmission rate of single-layer plastic film or sheet and multi-layer structures under a differential pressure.

One method uses a pressure sensor and the other uses a gas chromatograph to measure the amount of gas passing through a test sample.

A test specimen is mounted in a gas conduction cell to form a sealed barrier between the two chambers. The low pressure chamber is evacuated, then the high pressure chamber is emptied. A gas is supplied to the evacuated high-pressure chamber and penetrates the lower-pressure chamber. The amount of gas passing through the sample is determined by pressure increase on the low pressure side or by gas chromatography.

The test specimens shall be representative of the material under examination, free of wrinkles, folds and pinholes, and of the same thickness. It will be larger than the gas conduction area of ​​the measuring cell and can be installed hermetically.

Use three samples unless otherwise specified or agreed upon by the parties involved. Mark the side of the material facing the penetrating gas. In principle, the test should repeat the actual conditions of use, with the gas passing, for example, from inside the packaging material to the outside and vice versa.
