ISO 15184 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Film Hardness by Pencil Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 15184 standard. The ISO 15184 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for determining film hardness by pushing pencils of known hardness onto the film. The test may be performed on a single coating of a paint, varnish or related product or on the top layer of a multi-coat system.

This quick test was not found useful in comparing the pencil hardness of different coatings. It is more useful in providing relative ratings for a set of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in pencil hardness. The method can only be applied to smooth surfaces.

The electronic file of this document contains colors that are considered useful for proper understanding of the document. Therefore, users should consider printing this document using a color printer.

A pencil tip with a defined geometry is pushed onto the paint surface at an angle of 45° and a force of (7,35 ± 0,15) N is applied to the surface. The hardness of the pencil tip is gradually increased until the coating surface is marked with visible defects. The test result is the highest hardness at which no marks are formed.

Unless otherwise agreed, choose the substrate from one of those specified in ISO 1514, using the same type of material as the material to be used in practice, if possible. Substrate panels shall be flat and free of distortion. Unless otherwise agreed, prepare each test panel according to ISO 1514 and then coat with the product or system under test by the specified method.

Dry (or stove) and age, if applicable, each coated test panel for the specified time under specified conditions. Prior to testing, condition coated panels at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity for a minimum of 16 hours unless otherwise agreed.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 15184 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
