Two test procedures, König and persoz, are discussed in detail. The instruments embody the same principle. The oscillation amplitude of the pendulum touching a surface decreases faster the smoother the surface. However, they differ in oscillation dimensions, period and amplitude.

The interaction between pendulum and paint film is complex as it depends on both elastic and viscoelastic properties, and it is not possible to establish an overall relationship between the results from the two tests. Therefore, only one type of pendulum should be used in a given series of damping time measurements.

A pendulum resting on a pavement surface oscillates and the time for the oscillation amplitude to decrease by an amount specified in this international standard is measured. The shorter the damping time, the lower the stiffness.
