The sand filling method calculates the total volume and void percentage of the unit by pouring sand into the masonry unit and then measuring the volume of the sand. This method provides accurate and practical volume measurement.
The masonry unit is first prepared to be completely dry and clean. The unit is then filled with fine sand of a predetermined granule size and dry density. Sand is placed to fill all voids of the unit and excess sand is carefully removed.
Volume and void ratio are used to evaluate properties such as structural integrity and load-carrying capacity of masonry units. This test plays an important role in quality control and technical specifications of masonry units.
