ISO 15360-2 specifies a method for estimating adhesives and plastics in all grades of recycled pulp. Applies the principles for separation of adhesives and plastics described in ISO 15360‑1. The visualization and counting techniques described in ISO 15360‑1 are here replaced by image analysis.
ISO 15360-2 allows different sized screens to be used as well as different laboratory scanning devices when applying the specified method. Due to the wide variety of adhesives and plastics found in recycled pulps and the variety of sieving devices successfully used to measure them, it is impractical to define more closely the equipment or sieve sizes to be used.
This method will predict adhesives and plastics that are only sticky and remain on the screen at a given slit size under the temperature and pressure conditions of this test method. It is important to note that this will likely not be the total amount of Adhesive and Plastic actually present in a given pulp sample.
A sample of pulp in crushed form is washed through a laboratory strainer with a specified slit until the filtrate is clear. The material is removed and transferred to a filter paper. Adhesives are marked with either white aluminum oxide powder or coating particles drawn from specially coated paper.
Plastics are highlighted by painting the filter paper black and hiding the adhesives with black silicon carbide powder. Adhesives and plastics are measured using an image analyzer. The total number of adhesives and plastics is determined and reported. Other report formats are possible, including a histogram showing the adhesive and plastic numbers in various areas, or the area distribution.
