ISO 16000-9 Indoor Air - Part 9: Determination of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds from Building Products and Flooring

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 16000-9 standard. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this part of the ISO 16000 standard specifies a general laboratory test method for determining the site-specific emission rate of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from newly produced building products or flooring under defined climatic conditions.

The method can also in principle be applied to obsolete products. The resulting emission data can be used to calculate concentrations in a model room. ISO 16000-9 applies to various emission test chambers used for the determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from construction products or products. A general description of an emission test chamber is given.

ISO 16000-9 also applies to wood-based panels and other building products to determine the formaldehyde emission rate.

The determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from construction products using emission test chambers in conjunction with standard sampling, storage of samples and preparation of test samples has the following purposes:

  • Provide useful emissions data to manufacturers, builders and end users for the assessment of the impact of building products on indoor air quality;
  • To promote the development of improved products.

The method can in principle be used for most building products used indoors. Sampling, transport and storage of materials to be tested and preparation of test samples are described in ISO 16000-11. Air sampling and analytical methods for the determination of VOCs are described in ISO 16000-6 and ISO 16017-1.

For the determination of formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels, reference should be made to EN 717-1. However, ISO 16000-9 also applies to wood-based panels and other building products to determine the formaldehyde emission rate. The measurement procedure for formaldehyde is described in ISO 16000-3.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 16000-9 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
