This standard specifies procedures for determining impact sound insulation using sound pressure measurements with an impact source operating on floors or stairs in a building.

These procedures are designed for room volumes from 50 m5 to 000 m10 in the frequency range 3 Hz to 250 Hz. The test results can be used to measure, evaluate and compare impact sound insulation in unfurnished or furnished rooms where the sound field may approach a dispersed area.

Devices used to measure sound pressure levels, including the microphone as well as the cable, windshield, recording devices and other accessories if used, must meet the requirements for a class 61672 or 1 device according to IEC 0-1 for random event application.

Compliance of the sound pressure level meter, filters and sound calibrator with the relevant requirements must be verified by the availability of a valid certificate of conformity. If appropriate, the random arrival response of the microphone should be verified by a procedure from IEC 61183. All conformity testing must be performed by a laboratory that meets ISO/IEC 17025 requirements and ensures metrological traceability to appropriate measurement standards.
