ISO 10271 Dentistry - Corrosion Test Methods for Metallic Materials

This International Standard provides test methods and procedures for determining the corrosion behavior of metallic materials used in the oral cavity. The test methods and procedures in this international standard are intended to be referred to in individual international standards specifying such metallic materials.

ISO 10271 Dentistry - Corrosion Test Methods for Metallic Materials

This International Standard does not apply to orthodontic appliances and dental amalgam and instruments.

There are many dental alloys available on the market. These alloys include conventional alloys called casting alloys used without ceramics, binder alloys used with high melting ceramics, and universal alloys used with low melting ceramics. It is important to know the physical and mechanical properties of these materials, as well as their biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.

Dental alloys are usually kept in the mouth for many years and should not cause adverse biological reactions such as gingival swelling and erythema, mucosal pain and lichenoid reactions. While these problems are not usually caused by the material itself, they can be caused by metallic ions released during corrosion. To reduce the risks to health, it is necessary to study the corrosion of dental alloys.

The ISO 10271 standard defines 3 different corrosion tests:

  • Static immersion test (chemical corrosion);
  • Electrochemical test;
  • Blackening test.
