ISO 17234-2 Leather - Chemical Tests for the Determination of Certain Azo Colorants in Dyed Leathers - Part 2: Determination of 4-Aminoazobenzene

Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ISO 17234-2 standard is complementary to ISO 17234-1 and describes a specific procedure for detecting the use of certain azo colorants that can release 4-aminoazobenzene in products.

The procedure also detects 4-aminoazobenzene (solvent yellow 1) present in the goods as the free amine without reducing pretreatment.

Azo colorants capable of forming 4-aminoazobenzene produce the amines aniline and 17234-phenylenediamine under ISO 1-1,4 conditions. The presence of these 4-aminoazobenzene colorants cannot be reliably detected without additional information (for example, the chemical nature of the colorant used) or a special procedure.

Use of certain azo colorants which, by reductive cleavage of azo groups, can release one or more of the other aromatic amines listed in Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council. Except for 4-aminoazobenzene, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) cannot be determined quantitatively by this method.

The 4-aminoazobenzene compound is classified as a substance suspected of being carcinogenic to humans. Any use and disposal of this material will be in strict accordance with appropriate national health and safety regulations.

It is the user's responsibility to use safe and appropriate techniques when handling materials in this test method. Consult manufacturers for specific details such as material safety data sheets and other recommendations.

Good laboratory practices should be followed. Wear safety glasses and dust mask and disposable gloves in all laboratory areas when working with powder colorants and 4-aminoazobenzene. Users must comply with national and local safety regulations.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 17234-2 standard tests.
