Testing the Anti-Corrosion Properties of DIN 51802 Lubricating Greases with the SKF Emcor Method

Lubricating grease is tested in self-aligning ball bearings by adding water. After a certain cycle with a certain run time and a certain stop time at 80 rpm without heating and loading, the raceways of the test bearing outer rings are inspected for corrosion.

After removing the upper parts of the body, the shaft and test bed are removed from the lower parts, and the test bearings are pulled from the shaft and disassembled. The test bed outer rings should then be cleaned with white spirit and dried with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Under certain conditions, "dots" or "bands" in areas of "ghosting" or "discoloration" may be observed in the raceway area of ​​the balls or raceways of the test bed outer ring, which may change colour. These spots should not be confused with rust, which appears black or rusty brown when viewed from all directions. In case of doubt, other optical inspection methods should be used.
